The Zoo Precinct 121 years old
This March marks a special milestone for the Joburg Zoo and Zoo Lake – the “Zoo Precinct” will turn 121 years old!
For over a century, Joburg Zoo has been dedicated to world-class conservation, education, and creating unforgettable moments for visitors. We invite you, the vibrant citizenry, to participate in this historic celebration as we mark 121 years of wild memories.
Join the celebration! From special animal encounters to interactive educational sessions, there's something for everyone. Bring your family and friends to share in the joy and excitement.
Here’s what you can expect from our anniversary celebrations:
· 50% Discount on Entry Fees: From 1 to 28 March 2025, you can enjoy half-price entry to the Joburg Zoo, except for 21 March 2025. It’s the perfect opportunity to explore the Zoo’s exhibits and meet our amazing animals!
· Human Rights Day Celebration – 21 March 2025:
On 21 March, entry to the Zoo will be just R21 per person! In addition to discounted entry, we’ll have educational activities to engage visitors of all ages. It’s a great way to spend Human Rights Day with family and friends!
· March Birthdays – Free Entry:
If you were born in March, we’ve got a special treat for you! Enjoy free entry to the Joburg Zoo throughout the month, excluding 29 March. What better way to celebrate your birthday than by spending it with some of the world’s most incredible creatures?
· 121st birthday edition of the Zoo Trot– 9 March 2025
Join us for the Zoo Trot, a fun run around the Zoo. It’s a great way to get active and celebrate our shared birthday! Entry fees are discounted to R37 per person – this is a discount of 50%.
· Zoo Lake’s Day of Celebration – 16 March 2025
Celebrate with us at Zoo Lake with a fun-filled day of activities, including a clean-up exercise and a chance to dress up as your favourite animal! It’s all about honoring the history and beauty of Zoo Lake while having a blast with the whole family.
· Water clean-up: 18 March 2025,
A big water clean-up will take place at the Zoo as part of our commitment to environmental conservation.
· On 21 March 2025, Zoo Snooze (Sleepover) During Earth Hour:
Spend the night at the Zoo and experience a Zoo Snooze during Earth Hour – a truly unique way to celebrate our planet!

Enter our Zoo & Lake Birthday Photography Competition by sharing your best moments at the Zoo or Lake and stand a chance to win exciting prizes!
How to enter?
• Take or create an original photo supported by a short text [explaining how the photograph shows one of your favourite moments at the Zoo or at Zoo Lake. Competition is only on Facebook and Instagram
Competition Rules:
Entry is free of charge. Submission of an entry will be taken to mean acceptance of the Competition rules and the Terms and Conditions.
All participants must be 13 or older.
You must have full copyrights to the submitted material, including the full copyright of the original photo taken should the submission consist of additional visual work or elements. By submitting an entry, you will be presumed to have agreed to accept the Competition rules. Each entrant may submit a maximum of […] entries in the competition. As each entry will be handled separately, you need to fill out the [online submission form] for each entry if you chose to submit more than one entry.
Competition submissions must not include any endorsements of products or services, or any obscene, violent, racist or defamatory content. Incomplete entries or entries that do not comply with the formal specifications will be automatically disqualified.
Submissions may also not be accepted into the contest if the image in the entry features an identifiable individual who has not given their consent to appear or if the image features advertising or trademarks, which would otherwise require the [Zoo/Zoo Lake Users Committee] to obtain permission to use.
Special notes:
• Jazz in the Lights – 29 March 2025
Join us for an unforgettable Jazz in the Lights concert at the Zoo. Please note that only ticket holders will be allowed entry to the Zoo on this day. Tickets are R350 per person and must be purchased online in advance.
• Normal Entry Fees Apply: On 30 and 31 March, regular Zoo entry fees will apply: R126 per adult and R74 per child or senior citizen.
