A verdant park that complements the aesthetics of the already green stadium precinct, Orlando West Regional Park gives a peaceful atmosphere to the Soweto suburb. Its theme is birds and butterflies, and there are handcrafted figures of the two species erected on poles. The park is planted with endemic succulent trees, as well as 300 olive trees.

Adding to the outdoors theme, the park is furnished with an assortment of sport and recreation amenities – there are swings, a netball and basketball court, a professional-size football pitch and a 1km jogging track. There is also a large dedicated playground catering for the physically handicapped which includes a walking ramp and a wheelchair-friendly maze.

A big Township TV screen was installed just before the soccer World Cup in 2010, and the television is still used to broadcast sports matches and other programmes. Flowerbeds add colour and a dedicated braai area means families and friends can enjoy a full day outside, watching sport on the sprawling lawn.

Orlando West Park has a permanent irrigation system and is fully fenced, with 24-hour security. Construction of the park began in December in 2008 and was completed in July 2009 at a cost of R16-million.
