Once a barren field in the middle of southern Eldorado, Kremetart Park is an indicator of the changes that are being wrought in Johannesburg's townships. Today, Kremetart is the new South Africa at play. It is part of Johannesburg City Parks' efforts to green the southern suburbs.

The park provides an important recreational outlet for residents in the area, and its special outdoor screening facility draws crowds for big televised events.

Kremetart can handle up to 500 people, and can also be used for small corporate events, weddings and fun fairs.

Opened in March 2008, it has a host of lovely surprises, with indigenous trees, benches, two miniature soccer fields and a bubbling water feature greeting visitors. The lush green space cost more than R1-million to develop, while Township TV, in partnership with City Parks and DSTV, funds and supports the operation of the big-screen television.

There are free broadcasts of educational, sport, music and travel programmes on the big-screen TV, which is on from 2pm to 6pm daily and it is protected by 24-hour security.

The soccer pitches are sand pits, which are cheaper and easier to maintain than grass. City Parks borrowed this idea from Brazil, where children are accustomed to playing on the beaches – resulting in strong-legged soccer players.

The water feature is beautiful in its simplicity and much-loved by young children, who cannot resist the lure of the sparkling water. Big steel pipes, bent at 90 degree angles, spurt thick jets of water on to rocks.

No alcohol is allowed in the park.
