Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ), the custodians of open spaces including cemeteries, is calling on families to visit the graves of their loved ones and inspect the gravesites, due to the recent and continuous rains.
The organisation is mindful that we have entered the peak rainfall season, and subsequently, a few sections are often impacted by the rains with isolated reports of erosion and sunken graves in parts of Avalon, Allandale, Olifantsvlei, and Westpark cemeteries.
City Parks and Zoo understands the emotional significance of maintaining the final resting place of loved ones and is committed to assisting families who need to reinstate gravesites. In this regard, we would like to inform families that JCPZ will only refill graves with the consent of the families.
Residents can help by:
- Visiting the cemetery
- Identify and report erosion or caving-in of graves, collapsed headstones and tombstones.
- Contact the Acting Head of Cemeteries and Crematoria, Mr Zolile Mpophoma by calling 011 712 6600 or email zmpophoma@jhbcityparks.com.
- Please include the following information:
- Cemetery name
- Name of deceased
- Section where the grave is located, and the
- Grave number
City Parks and Zoo will strive to address concerns promptly and with the utmost care and respect. Your cooperation in inspecting the gravesites is essential in helping us maintain the beauty and dignity of our cemeteries.
